It's made of some basic cake ingredients, and when completely done, the meter cake looks just like any other log cake out there, but once you cut it, you'll see it's completely different. And so unusual. And confusing. And thrilling. But so easy-to-make. Shortly, it's a must-try!
As you'll see below, the way this cake is assembled is something you've probably done before, but it's the way it's cut that makes the difference.
And these are the ingredients you'll need...
for the cake sheets:
- 5 eggs
- 250 g sugar
- 150 ml milk or water
- 100 ml oil
- 250 g flour
- 10 g baking powder
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder OR food coloring
for the filling:
- 400 ml milk
- 200 g sugar
- 50 g pudding powder (any flavor) OR cornstarch
- 250 g butter (softened)
- Prepare the filling first so it can cool completely before assembling the cake.
Combine 100 ml of milk with the pudding powder or cornstarch. Put the remaining milk and sugar into a pot and start heating it over low fire. Once it comes to a boil, add the pudding mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until it thickens. Remove from fire, cover the pudding with some plastic foil as shown in step 5 here, and set aside to cool completely. - Beat butter until soft and creamy. Add pudding and beat again until creamy and homogenized.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the cake sheets. Separate egg yolks from egg whites. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
4. In a separate bowl beat egg yolks and sugar until sugar melts and the mixture becomes light-colored, almost white. Add milk and oil and combine. Combine flour and baking powder and stir it into the yolks mixture. At the end, gradually stir in the beaten egg whites. |
Note that the thing that is important about this cake is to have 3 different colors in it - two for the cake sheets and one for the filling. For example, this time I used natural yellowish cake, brown cake and white filling I got from a cornstarch, but you can play with the colors and use some food coloring for the cake and chocolate or strawberry pudding for the filling. There are dozens of combinations out there - you just have to choose the one that you like the most.
6. Once the cake loaves have cooled, cut them into 1-1,5 cm thick slices, and start assembling the cake: take one yellow slice, spread with 1 tablespoon of the filling and sandwich it with one brown slice. Spread the brown slice with another tablespoon of filling and merge with a yellow slice... repeat this procedure until you spent all brown and yellow slices. You'll get a long "sandwiched" cake.
Hope you like it!
Enjoy and bon appétit!
